‘Police is with me’: Statement of suspended TMC MLA laying foundation stone of Murshidabad Babri Masjid

A major incident raising fears of communal tension has come to light in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. On Saturday (December 6), a group in Beldanga town allegedly collected bricks to lay the foundation of ‘Babri Masjid’, while people were seen raising slogans of Humayun Kabir Zindabad in a video circulated on social media.

Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir had a few days ago claimed to re-establish ‘Babri Masjid’ in his constituency Murshidabad. His statement had already created a political stir and serious concerns about law and order. Hours after photographs and videos of a group carrying bricks surfaced at Beldanga, it became clear that despite Calcutta High Court’s instructions to maintain law and order in Murshidabad, religious fanatic activities were going on openly in the grounds.

The High Court on Friday (December 5) had given strict instructions to the state government to stop any communal tension or illegal construction and ensure peace. Despite this, Humayun Kabir, who claimed to be attempting the foundation-pujan, himself told the media that he had the support of the police.

Speaking to the media, Kabir said, “I will lay the foundation stone of Babri Masjid today. The police is supporting me. I have already spoken to them. After yesterday’s order of the Calcutta High Court, the police are supporting me. They have provided me security…” This statement of Kabir has raised many questions on the role of the state police, as the state government has formally suspended them and the court has also taken a tough stance regarding law and order.

This incident in Beldanga has put the local administration under pressure. There are reports of additional police forces being deployed in the district, although the administration has not yet clarified whether this action was taken to stop the construction or just to maintain peace. Opposition parties have alleged that the open support of TMC leaders and administrative laxity are leading to situations that are a threat to social harmony. No official statement has been issued by the Bengal government on this matter at present.

Humayun Kabir has been suspended by the party after his controversial comments a few days ago. He had claimed in public programs that ‘Babri Masjid’ would be constructed in Beldanga at any cost. His comment and now his attempt to lay the foundation has further increased the sensitivity in the state.
