Political turmoil over Farakka violence, BJP raised demand from central forces!

The politics of the state has heated up after the vandalism and violence at the BDO office in Farakka in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the incident and demanded deployment of central forces to complete the ongoing SIR in the state.

BJP leaders say that law and order has completely broken down in the state and efforts are being made to influence the electoral process through fear and violence.

The reaction comes a day after an angry mob, allegedly led by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Monirul Islam, stormed the Farakka BDO office. The protesters vandalized the office and also damaged the room of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).

The crowd alleged that in the name of SIR hearing, common people were being harassed for small mistakes. Due to this violence, the SIR hearing of the voter list going on in the BDO office had to be stopped.

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya described this incident as very serious on social media platform ‘X’.

He wrote in the ‘X’ post that the attack on BDO office, ERO, AERO and Micro Observers in Farakka assembly constituency is extremely worrying.

Malviya alleged that this violence was allegedly carried out at the behest of Trinamool leaders. He said that law and order is a state subject and its entire responsibility rests on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Malviya demanded the Election Commission to take cognizance of this matter and take strict action. He said that the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal should take immediate action on this incident and accountability should be fixed from the DGP to the concerned SP. The electoral process cannot be allowed to be weakened through violence and fear.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case at Farakka police station based on the complaint of the BDO. This FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984. So far two people have been arrested in this case.

The situation became more serious after the incident when around 55 micro observers wrote a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal alleging negligence in security and recused themselves from SIR duty.

Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari also made a scathing attack on the state administration.

He said that the attack on micro observers in Farakka is extremely shameful and a direct attack on democracy. The officer alleged that the officers were brutally beaten while on duty, two officers suffered serious injuries, and there was no police protection present at the spot.

Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the Trinamool government wants to manipulate the voter list by weakening the SIR process. He demanded the Election Commission to use its special powers under Article 324, deploy central forces and complete the SIR without any fear or favour.

He said that now it is necessary to take strict steps to save democracy from anarchy.
