48 teams, 104 matches… What is special in FIFA World Cup 2026? Know every detail here

Football fans who are eagerly waiting for the FIFA World Cup 2026 will soon be able to see their favorite players in action. Football’s Mahakumbh is going to start from June 11, which will last for 39 days. America, Canada and Mexico are hosting it together. For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, this tournament will be held in three countries. Earlier in 2002, Japan and South Korea jointly hosted the World Cup.

 

This time 48 teams are participating in the World Cup. Since 1998, 32 teams have participated. That means this time the number of teams has been increased. A total of 104 matches will be played in the tournament in 16 cities, making it the biggest World Cup in history. World Cup matches will be played at 11 venues in America. World Cup matches will be organized at 3 venues in Mexico and 2 in Canada. Mexico and Canada will host 13 matches each. The remaining 78 matches will be held in America.

What is the format of the tournament?

All 48 teams are divided into 12 groups. The top-2 teams of each group will reach the knockout round. The 8 best performing third placed teams will also enter the knockout stage on the basis of ranking. After this there will be matches of Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final. The semi-finals will be held on 14 and 15 July, while the final match will be played on 19 July.

Which are the new teams?

This time 4 new teams will be seen in the World Cup. Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan have qualified for football’s extravaganza for the first time, taking the total number of nations participating in the World Cup to 84.

Who is the most experienced and oldest player?

Portugal’s legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will be the most experienced player to enter the World Cup. He has now played 226 international matches. This is Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup. Argentina’s great player Lionel Messi is also appearing in the World Cup for the sixth time. Both of them will become the first players to achieve this feat. Messi has played maximum 26 matches in the World Cup.

 

Talking about the oldest player, he is Scotland’s goalkeeper Craig Gordon. His age will be 43 years and 162 days on the first day of the tournament. Mexico’s Gilbert Mora is the youngest player. He will be 17 years and 240 days old on the opening day of the World Cup.

So far 8 countries have won the title

In the 96-year history of the FIFA World Cup, so far only 8 countries have become champions. Those 6 countries have won more than one title. Brazil has won the trophy maximum 5 times. Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) are the only two countries to have defended their titles. It remains to be seen whether Argentina can achieve this feat or not.

Where will the World Cup be seen in India?

Football World Cup matches in India will be telecast on ZEE’s new channel Unite8 Sports. Indian football fans can watch live streaming of the World Cup on ZEE5 app. However, for this they may have to stay awake late, because due to the time difference between the host countries (America, Canada and Mexico) and India, most of the matches will be played late at night or early in the morning.
