Warden who sexually exploited 21 minor children in Arunachal gets death sentence

Itanagar: A special POCSO court in UPiya, Arunachal Pradesh has sentenced an accused to death for sexually assaulting 21 children in a school hostel. The court has also found two more people guilty in this case and sentenced them to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each. All these accused were working in the school. The matter came to light in the month of November last year when two children living in the hostel complained about this to their families.

The main accused in this case is Yumken Bagra who has been sentenced by the court. Yumken was posted as warden at the dormitory of Karo Government Residential School in Shi-Yomi district. It is alleged that here he sexually assaulted children aged between 6 to 15 years between 2019 and 2022. A total of 21 children including 15 girls were included in these.

Hindi teacher is an accused

Capital Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Rajbir Singh said that the other two accused include Marbom Gomdir and Singtun Yorpen. Marbom is a Hindi teacher at Gomdir School, while Singtun is the former headmaster of Yourpen School. The main accused Bagra was convicted under sections 328 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as sections 6, 10 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, the Superintendent of Police said.

Considering the seriousness of the crime of the main accused Yumken Bagra, the court has sentenced him to death. Regarding this matter, the police officer said, “This decision of the court not only resolves the immediate issue, but also acts as a turning point for wider social awareness about the safety of children, and their rights and “Strengthens the collective responsibility to protect well-being.”

The victimized children had complained to their parents

This issue of the school hostel came to light when two sisters studying here complained to their parents in November last year. Then the parents of the children had lodged an FIR in this matter at Monigong police station. As soon as he got wind of the revelation of the case, the main accused Bagra had absconded and was arrested by the police in November last year. Itanagar bench of Gauhati High Court had taken suo motu cognizance of this case on July 21. During the hearing, the court had also canceled the bail given to Bagra.
