Kapil Sharma losing charm? Declining viewership of his OTT show raises concerns

New Delhi: Kapil Sharma is undeniably one of the greatest comedians India has ever produced. Over the years, the 43-year-old star has achieved unprecedented success and emerged as one of the highest-paid celebrities. But has he lost his charm after transitioning to OTT?

For over a decade, Kapil was the undisputed king of Indian television comedy. His rise, from a performer to a host, is one of the most remarkable success stories in Indian entertainment, eventually leading to his own show and making him the highlight of many celebrated award nights.

In 2024, Kapil made a move to a streaming giant. The Great Indian Kapil Show, featuring 13 episodes, premiered on Netflix in March with high expectations. And, the first episode of its second season was released on Saturday (September 21, 2024).

The Great Indian Kapil Show viewership

According to a hindustantimes.com report, citing Netflix’s Global Top 10 list, the second season’s inaugural episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show ranked number eight on the non-English TV list last week, garnering 1.2 million views and 1.4 million viewing hours. In contrast, the first season’s premiere episode had 2.5 million views and ranked third globally in the Top 10 list.

Judging by these numbers, it might seem like the second season is off to a slower start. However, its upcoming episodes will be bringing to the screen a star-studded lineup of guests. Now, it would be really interesting to see if Kapil can regain his viewership and deliver another hit season. A new episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show airs every Saturday at 8 pm on Netflix.
