UEFA ban FC Barcelona fans from one away game for racist behavior

New Delhi: Barcelona were prohibited by UEFA on Friday from selling tickets to supporters for its upcoming Champions League away game due to the exhibition of a banner with Nazi undertones about the team’s new German coach. A black flag bearing the words “Flick Heil” was flown last week after a 2-1 loss to Monaco, reportedly as a memorial to coach Hansi Flick.

As Barcelona face Red Star Belgrade on 7th November in the fourth matchday of UEFA Champions League 2024/25, UEFA have claimed that the club will be charged with “racism and/or other discriminatory conduct.” and the disciplinary action will take effect on that particular day.

The ticket sales prohibition triggered Barcelona’s probationary sentence that UEFA had imposed during the previous season. During a Champions League match in April, spectators at Paris Saint-Germain gave Nazi salutes. Barcelona were also penalized 10,000 euros ($11,000) by UEFA’s disciplinary judges, who also imposed a fresh probationary punishment on the team in case of a repeat infringement the following year. That will cause one away match in a European competition to have an additional ticket sales ban.

Barcelona will be facing Young Boys in the second matchday of UEFA Champions League 2024/25 campaign, and as the team prepares to face off against the Swiss side, there are certain internal issues that need to be resolved here. They managed to lose their opening game against the French side, AS Monaco, where the fans were left frustrated. This would be the best possible chance for the Catalan side to get the job done, to bounce back and open their account for this season’s Champions League.
