Foreign Minister Jaishankar met UN Chief Guterres and General Assembly President Yang, discussed these issues

New York: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met separately with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the new President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Philemon Yang here and endorsed Yang's vision of unity in diversity, peace and 'human well-being' in West Asia. and discussed global issues such as the conflict in Ukraine.

Jaishankar is in the US to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and met Guterres and Yang on the sidelines of the General Assembly session on Thursday. Jaishankar said in a post on 'X', it is always a pleasure to speak with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

World leaders on Sunday unanimously adopted a future pact that promised to reform the 15-member United Nations Security Council (UNSC). There is an urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable. They also agreed to expand the Security Council to make it more representative.

Jaishankar, in a separate post, said it was a pleasure to meet Philemon Yang, the new President of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York today. Assured India's full support to his vision of unity in diversity, peace, human welfare and dignity for all everywhere.'

Yang also praised India's role in promoting the interests of the Global South at the X after meeting Jaishankar. The term 'Global South', which emerged in the 1960s, generally refers to the regions of Latin America, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

In particular, this means countries outside Europe and North America, in the Southern Hemisphere and the equatorial region, which are mostly low-income and politically backward.

Yang said that today I met India's Foreign Minister Dr. S. Happy to welcome Jaishankar. We discussed priorities and key issues for UNGA 79 and the outcomes of future summits.

I also appreciated India's role in advancing the interests of the Global South. Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Jaishankar also met Belarus Foreign Minister Maxim Ryazhenkov and discussed “health, education, technology and prospects for deeper economic ties”.

Jaishankar also met his Romanian counterpart Luminita Odobescu and took stock of the growing bilateral activities in tourism and defence. They exchanged views on the Ukraine issue, he said in a post on 'X'.

Jaishankar also met his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stengard. He, in a separate post on 'X', talked about deepening bilateral relations in the areas of sustainable development, investment and mobility of skilled workers. Exchanged views on Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific.

He also met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Montenegro, Ervin Ibrahimovic, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. Our talks focused on furthering cooperation in trade, health and tourism, he said on X.

Jaishankar also met his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita. He also held a “warm first meeting” with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdellatty and discussed the continued progress in our bilateral relations and exchanged views on developments in the region.

Jaishankar also talked about India's growing cooperation with the Mediterranean region during the meeting with his Slovenian counterpart Tanja Fajón. He also met Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.

Our discussion centered around the current situation in West Asia, Jaishankar said in a post on X. He also met world leaders, including President Prithviraj Singh Rupun of Mauritius and his counterparts Amerie Browne of Trinidad and Tobago and Albert Shingiro of Burundi. (agency)
