Shigeru Ishiba becomes the new Prime Minister of Japan, replacing Fumio Kishida

Tokyo: Japan's ruling party on Friday elected former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba as its leader, making it certain that he will become Prime Minister next week. Fumio Kishida and his cabinet ministers will resign on Tuesday. Ishiba will form the new Cabinet after being formally elected in a parliamentary vote.

Ishiba is considered a defense policy expert. He is a supporter of Taiwan democracy. Ishiba defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takachi, who is considered a staunch conservative. A record nine people, including two women, participated in this race.
