New Delhi: For many years, there was only one face of chess in India, the name was Vishwanathan Anand. For many years, Anand made the country proud by winning medals at the international level. For many years, no one other than Anand could achieve this success. However, the situation is different in 2024. There are not one but many names in India who are being considered as Anand’s successor. The prominent name among them is D Gukesh. This 18-year-old player has done many such feats which only Anand has done for India so far. Making the entire country of India proud, Gukesh Dommaraju, along with other Indian chess prodigies, has managed to secure two gold medals at the Chess Olympiad 2024.

Gukesh became Candidates Champion at the age of 17:

D Gukesh won the Candidates Tournament this year at the age of 17. He was the youngest player to win this tournament. He became the second Indian player to achieve this feat after Anand. Gukesh’s success at such a young age may surprise you, but he has sacrificed a lot for this success.

Gukesh did not go to school:

Gukesh told Chess Base India in an interview that he did not live his childhood like normal children. He did not go to school continuously after class four. However, he does not regret this. Gukesh also says that he was very good in his studies and as long as he went to school continuously, he was a topper. After this, he decided to focus on one thing and chose chess.

Gukesh got a luxury car as a gift:

Gukesh may have stopped going to school regularly but his school celebrates his every success. When Gukesh returned to the country after winning the candidates, Velammal Vidyalaya Ayanambakkam organized a big event. In this event, Gukesh was given a Mercedes Benz worth Rs 90 lakh as a gift. Not only Gukesh but World Cup runner-up R Praggnanandhaa was also a student of this school. Vishwanathan Anand is also a student of this school.

Gukesh answered the question about his girlfriend:

In an interview, Gukesh was asked if he had a girlfriend. Gukesh laughingly replied that he does not have a girlfriend. After this, he was asked, ‘Do you think that having a girlfriend will affect your game?’ Gukesh replied, ‘I have never thought about this. However, if this happens, the time given to chess will decrease. That relationship will take up chess time. It is not necessary that it affects the game, but it definitely demands your time. I don’t think I am of the age to do all this.’
