Gaming market for PC, monitors expected to reach 69.3 million this year

The global gaming market for PCs and monitors is expected to reach 69.3 million this year, up 9 percent from 2023, according to a new report.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), gaming desktops, a key segment for high-end gaming and monitors, are expected to recover in 2025 as new GPUs hit stores.

Gaming penetration is also expected to increase further, with gaming accounting for 20 percent of the total PC and monitor market by 2028.

In the second quarter of this year, about 10.6 million units were shipped as gaming PCs saw a modest recovery of 2.4 percent year-over-year.
Gaming monitor growth remained strong as monitor shipments reached nearly 6.5 million units and increased 35 percent year-over-year.

Economic challenges aside, the slowdown in gaming PCs is also due to a lack of exciting hardware and a lack of investment from both consumers and suppliers in adjacent markets like handhelds, according to Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC.

He said that despite further improvement in the market in the coming quarters, gaming PC volumes will remain lower than those seen in 2021, as some consumers use other methods of gaming alongside or instead of traditional gaming PCs.

According to IDC, after unit contraction in both 2022 and 2023, the gaming market for PCs and monitors will recover in 2024. Jay Chou, research manager at IDC, said gaming monitors have achieved some milestones in the second quarter of this year.

Additionally, gaming's share of the total monitor market reached a record 20 percent, as continued price declines and the removal of budget from the slow-moving gaming PC landscape also helped, Chau pointed out.
