Vishvajit wins bronze, Anjli into final
Vishvajit More won India’s first medal at the 2024 U23 World Wrestling Championships after winning a bronze medal in the men’s 55 Kg Greco-Roman category in Tirana, Albania on Wednesday.
He was India’s lone medalist in the Greco-Roman category at this competition which he achieved with a win in a high-scoring (14-10) bronze medal match against an AIN wrestler Adam Ulbashev.
Vishvajit had a solid outing at the competition, winning his first two round matches with technical superiority against Moldovan and Kazakhstan wrestlers respectively.
However, he lost his semifinal bout (5-14) to eventual champion Ali Ahmadi Vafa of Iran despite having an early lead. But, he added another major medal to his tally after a silver from the Asian U23 Championships.
Former U17 World Champion, Suraj Vashist was the only other Greco-roman wrestler to reach the medal matches but he failed to convert that and lost his bronze medal match to Georgia’s Pridon Abuladze.
Anjli reaches final, Priya Malik exits
In the women’s freestyle category, Anjli reached the final of women’s 59 kg with a dominating victory against Italian wrestler, Aurora Russo in the semifinals on Wednesday.
She will face the defending champion Solomiia Vynnyk of Ukraine in the final tomorrow, aiming to become India’s only second female wrestler to win a U23 World title.
On the other hand, India’s biggest medal hope Priya Malik exited the competition in the quarterfinal with a close defeat against Japan’s Nodoka Yamamoto.
Bhavika Patel (55 Kg) and Monika (68 Kg) also have a medal chance tomorrow as they reached the repechage round despite losing their round of 16 matches against Mexican and Japanese wrestlers respectively.
The other five women’s freestyle wrestlers (53 Kg, 57 Kg, 62 Kg, 65 kg, 72 Kg) including reigning medalist Neha Sharma (57 Kg) will also begin their competition on Thursday,
