HBO backs J.K. Rowling despite controversial remarks on transgenders- The Week
Television network HBO has stood firm on the decision of involving renowned author J.K. Rowling in the production of the upcoming Harry Potter reboot. Many netizens were enraged on finding that Rowling, who has not shied away from making controversial remarks on the transgender community, was involved in the show. One user wrote, “how can i enjoy the reboot of books and films that brought me up when the creator herself makes comments i dont support?”
HBO has come in the defence of the author, according to a statement given to Variety. “We have been working with J.K. Rowling and in the Harry Potter business for over 20 years. With millions of fans continuing to enjoy movies, games and experiences, we’ve had great success and her contribution has been invaluable.”
The statement further read that Rowling has the right to express her personal views and that their main focus is on the production of the reboot. “We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance. JK Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
J.K Rowling’s controversial remarks on transgenders
In 2019, Rowling defended Maya Forstater, a gender-critical activist, who was fired after she made anti-trans statements. She later came under fire, in 2020, for responding to an op-ed article on X, then Twitter, titled, “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate”. The author was not happy that the article did used the word “people”, instead of “women”.
“‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” she tweeted.
Though she faced immense backlash, Rowling supported her views with more detail. “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”
Daniel Radcliffe, who played the titular character in the Harry Potter franchise, responded, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo (Rowling) or I.”
His co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint also responded to Rowling’s views, stating that they will always stand by the transgender community.
Rowling has denied being transphobic and said that “transgender people need and deserve protection” but believes it is unsafe to allow “any man who believes or feels he’s a woman” into bathrooms or changing rooms.
The author has continued to be vocal about her views on the transgender community.
