After Kanguva and Indian 2 box office drubbing, Tamil producers seek ban on FDFS YouTube reviews- The Week

Following negative reviews that led to the drubbing of Suriya starrer ‘Kanguva’ in the box office, the producers’ association in the state have sought a ban on YouTubers in theatre precincts.

The Tamil Nadu Producers Council urged theatre owners to ban interviews by YouTube channels after First Day First Shows (FDFS).

In the statement that extends to four pages, the producers’ body slammed incitement of hatred in the guise of film reviews and making personal attacks.

Citing the box office fiasco of recent big-budget Tamil films like Kanguva, Indian 2 and Vettaiyan, the producers said the collections of these movies were affected by negative reviews on the first day.

However, the council said journalist have the right to point out the flaws in a film but no one should attack anyone personally or destroy the entire movie. “We urge journalists to review films but by ensuring that this should not spread hatred on public platforms,” the outfit stated.

The producers pointed out that no one would review a restaurant by declaring their life has been ruined by one bad meal.

They also urged all associations linked to the film industry to unite and stop this practice by not encouraging them anymore.

In 2023, the Malayalam film industry sought ban on YouTube reviews as the negative perception about movies affected the box office collection. Following this, the Kerala High Court banned YouTube reviews within first seven days of the movie release.
