“Rohit batted at no.6 slot on his Test debut”: Manjrekar opines on whether KL Rahul should play as an opener when Indian captain returns for the second Test against Australia

India captain Rohit Sharma, who opted out of the ongoing first Test against Australia due to the birth of his second child, will return for the second game of the five-match series. KL Rahul was promoted in the batting order, and the right-handed player justified the move by playing two good innings. Although KL scored 26 in the first essay, he didn’t have trouble while facing the Australian fast bowlers. His knock was cut short by a controversial decision by the TV Umpire, who overturned the verdict of the on-field official.

In the second innings, Rahul added an unbeaten 172 runs for the first wicket and took India’s lead to 218 runs with three days left. He is likely to be sent back to the No. 6 slot in the Adelaide game as returning skipper Rohit will play as an opening batter. However, fans are not in favor of the move as Rahul has been magnificent, and they want the team management not to change his position.

Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar also opined on the matter and indirectly said that Rohit should bat at 6 and not Rahul.

“When Rohit Sharma made his Test debut against the West Indies, he batted at the No.6 slot and even scored a hundred. I know a lot is being said about KL Rahul and his chances to play as an opener in the second Test. Rohit is coming back, and he is the designated opener and it is a good headache to have,” he said on Star Sports.

In the first Test against the Windies in 2013, Rohit amassed 177 runs off 301 balls, laced with 23 fours and 1 six.
