Chinese actress Zhao Lusi sparked controversy after spending 49,995 yuan (US$6,910) on monetary gifts for fans to mark the finale of her drama “The Story of Pearl Girl”.
To celebrate the show’s 40th episode, Zhao distributed virtual “red envelopes” with 15 yuan each to a selected group of fans. While the gesture quickly trended on Weibo, it received mixed reactions, Lao Dong reported.
Some fans praised Zhao for her generosity, while others criticized her, suggesting it was a desperate move to retain fans following the drama’s poor reception.
“The Story of Pearl Girl” had faced significant criticism during its airing for its weak storyline, unconvincing visual effects, and lack of chemistry between Zhao and her co-star, Liu Yuning.

Despite the show’s struggles, “The Story of Pearl Girl” premiered on Netflix’s Hong Kong and Taiwan platforms in November, topping regional charts shortly after its release and being slated for a global release in over 190 economies.
