Indiscriminate firing in South Africa, 25 people shot, 11 dead, police engaged in investigation

Open Fire on Johannesburg: A massive shooting incident took place in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday morning, in which 11 people died and 14 were injured. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the shooting occurred at 4:15 am at the Soulsville Hostel in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria. Police got information about this incident at around 6 in the morning.

According to the SAPS, a total of 25 people were affected by the shooting, including 11 who died and 14 who were injured. All the injured have been admitted to the hospital. The dead included three minors. Two boys aged 3 and 12 and a girl aged 16. The rest of the deceased are adults. According to SAPS the death toll may rise further.

Police busy searching for suspects

Police have started searching for three unknown suspects in this case. SAPS national spokeswoman Brigadier Ethelenda Matthey said detectives and the Serious and Violent Crime Unit, including forensic and ballistic experts, immediately arrived at the scene and began an investigation. According to local media, the gunmen entered the hostel, where some people were drinking, and suddenly started opening fire.

Police also said that illegal and unlicensed liquor shops are playing a big role in increasing crime and violence. Between April and September this year, police closed 11,975 unlicensed liquor shops and arrested 18,676 people for selling illegal liquor.
