Punjab Weather Update: The Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave alert for the next three days from today (May 24) in Punjab and the capital Chandigarh. On May 25, 26 and 27, the fury of Loo is likely to peak in many parts of the state. Thereafter, the weather may change slightly on May 28 and 29, where gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph and thundershowers have been warned.

In view of the terrible heat, the Punjab government has taken important steps and made a major change in the timings of government offices and schools. On the other hand, schools in Chandigarh will now remain closed till June 30.

Temperature status in cities of Punjab

The average summer temperature in the state has risen by 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal. Last Saturday, Bathinda was the hottest with a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature of the major cities of the state was recorded as follows:

The timings of government offices and schools will change from tomorrow (Monday).

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced that all government offices and schools (for all classes) in Punjab will be closed from Monday (May 25) due to extreme heat. Will open at 7:30 and afternoon Close at 1:30 p.m will be This decision has been taken to protect children and workers from the intense afternoon sun.

Ban on outdoor activities of summer camps in Chandigarh

Summer vacation in Chandigarh will be from 23rd May to 30th June, 2026. However, teachers will have to come to school on June 29-30. Meanwhile, the ‘Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights’ (CCPCR) has issued strict instructions that children should not be exposed to the sun during summer camps in schools. Children should be kept inside cool and ventilated rooms only.

  • 24 and 25 May: Partly cloudy skies may persist, but mercury will remain between 40°C and 41°C.
  • May 26-27: The sky will be crystal clear and the temperature will rise to 42°C to 43°C due to intense sunshine.
  • May 28: Cloudy skies are expected again but the temperature may touch the 44°C mark.

When the temperature approaches 45 degrees, electronic devices like mobile phones, laptops and power banks overheat quickly. This poses a risk of battery damage or explosion. Avoid keeping them in direct sunlight and in closed vehicles.

Health Department Advisory: Do’s and Don’ts?

Be sure to:

  • Drink plenty of water, lemon water or ORS solution.
  • Wear light colored loose cotton clothes and cover your head with umbrella or towel while going out.
  • Eat fruits rich in water like watermelon, cantaloupe and cucumber.

Avoid these:

  • Avoid going out unnecessarily between 12 noon and 3 pm.
  • Avoid tea, coffee or sugary drinks as they dehydrate the body.
  • Stay away from fried, spicy and stale food.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a parked vehicle.

Symptoms of heat stroke:

If the body temperature rises above 40°C (104°F), the skin becomes red and dry, severe headache, vomiting, nervousness or fainting occur, immediately contact the specialized ‘Heatwave Center’ of the nearest government hospital.
