BJP’s big lead in Falta by-election, TMC candidate thrown at fourth place

Bharatiya Janata Party has taken a big lead in the initial trends of re-counting of votes in Falta assembly constituency of West Bengal. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda is leading with a lead of more than 14 thousand votes after the first five rounds of counting. A total of 21 rounds of counting are continuing on Sunday.

After the fifth round, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda has got 30,562 votes, while Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Shambhu Nath Kurmi is in second place with 16,048 votes. At the same time, Jahangir Khan, associated with All India Trinamool Congress and considered close to Abhishek Banerjee, has been thrown at the fourth position. He has received only 1,685 votes till five rounds.

Interestingly, Jahangir Khan had distanced himself from the election contest just two days before the re-polling. Despite this, his name remained in the electoral process and his performance in the vote counting appears to be very weak.

This time there was special political interest in Falta seat because this area has been considered a strong stronghold of TMC since 2011. But during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, there were allegations of alleged electoral irregularities at many polling stations here. The BJP had alleged that ruling party workers attempted election rigging on a large scale.

Following these allegations, the Election Commission of India had canceled the earlier voting. According to the Commission, complaints of voter intimidation, suspicious activities related to EVMs and violation of electoral process were received from many booths, after which the decision to conduct re-polling was taken.

Political analysts believed that after the electoral setback, TMC would campaign aggressively to strengthen its organizational base in Falta. However, before the voting, the top leadership of the party appeared almost inactive in the area. Neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held any rally nor Abhishek Banerjee took part in the election campaign.

The situation was also in the news because Falta falls under the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by Abhishek Banerjee and is considered the second most influential leader of the party.

Jahangir Khan has been in controversies before also. Before the assembly elections, he had openly challenged IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, who was brought from Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Pal Sharma was deployed as an election observer and is identified as an encounter specialist officer. In West Bengal also he was addressed as Singham.

Responding to this, Jahangir Khan compared himself with film actor Allu Arjun’s popular character “Pushpa”. He had said, “If he is Singham, then I am Pushpa.” The statement came at a time when Sharma had reportedly visited Khan’s house before voting to warn him against voter intimidation.

At present, the initial trends have completely changed the political equations in Falta. The BJP’s rise is being seen as an important sign in state politics, especially in an area which has long been considered a TMC stronghold.
