Mandatory V Logo On All Vegan Food Products From July 1 Fssai Issues New Regulations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a big step to make the identification of vegan food products in the country easy and transparent. Under the new rules, it will be mandatory to have a standardized green ‘VEGAN’ logo on the packets of all approved vegan food products from July 1, 2027. The aim of this step is to provide accurate information about the products to the consumers and to prevent misleading claims.
FSSAI has implemented this system under the ‘Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026’. The authority says this logo will not be merely a promotional mark, but a mandatory regulatory requirement to ensure that a product’s claim as vegan conforms to the prescribed standards.
According to the new rules, any food product bearing the ‘VEGAN’ logo must be completely free from animal-based ingredients. Milk, curd, cheese, butter, eggs, honey, gelatin and any other ingredients derived from animal products cannot be used in this. In this way, consumers will be able to understand that the product in question is completely plant-based just by looking at the logo.
FSSAI has said that industries have been given enough time to make changes in packaging and labeling to conform to the new rules. By July 2027, companies will be able to update their products’ packaging, ingredient descriptions and certification processes. After this, it will be mandatory to display the prescribed logo on every approved vegan product available in the market.
The food regulator had notified this amendment on May 21. After this, FSSAI shared this information in a post released on social media platform X on June 5. The authority said this step has been taken to ensure compliance with standards and strengthen consumer confidence.
Experts believe that the demand for vegan products has increased continuously in the last few years in India. A large number of people are turning to plant-based foods due to issues such as health awareness, animal welfare and environmental protection. In such a situation, a uniform and clear labeling system will help consumers make better decisions.
This decision of FSSAI includes India in the category of countries where standardized symbols are used to identify vegan products. This will increase transparency in the domestic market as well as encourage producers to provide clear information about ingredients.
Vegan products include soy-based foods, almond and cashew milks, coconut-based cheeses, burgers made with pea protein, and many other plant-based options. Apart from this, fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains, nuts and seeds also naturally fall in the vegan category.
