Time limit will be fixed for Yamuna revitalization project, review will be done every 20 days: Amit Shah

New Delhi. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah chaired the review meeting of Yamuna Rejuvenation Project in Delhi. During this, he said that clean and clear Yamuna is a joint resolution of the Central and State governments under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to complete it soon, all the concerned agencies will have to work under an integrated action plan. In the meeting, the progress of works related to cleaning of Yamuna river, pollution control, sewage management and overall revitalization of the river was reviewed. While instructing the officials, Amit Shah said that better coordination should be established between various departments and agencies, so that all the work of the project can be completed within the stipulated time.

During the meeting, the Home Minister directed that a clear time limit should be set for each work of the Yamuna Rejuvenation Project and its regular monitoring should be ensured. Mere completion of the projects is not enough, but effective arrangements for their long-term maintenance should also be developed, so that the cleanliness and water quality of Yamuna is maintained in the long run. Amit Shah told officials to review the progress of the project every 20 days. Regular reviews will speed up the work, establish better coordination among various agencies and help in achieving the targets within the stipulated time.

To make Yamuna pollution free and uninterrupted, special emphasis was laid on better coordination and timely implementation between the Center and the states. The meeting was attended by representatives of various central ministries along with senior officials of the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. He clarified that instead of making separate efforts to clean Yamuna, all agencies and states will have to work in a coordinated manner with a team spirit. In the meeting, the Home Minister directed the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to work jointly to ensure eco-flow in Yamuna river as per the prescribed standards. He said that for the revitalization of the river, it is very important to maintain adequate water flow, so that the natural form and ecosystem of the river can be preserved.

Cow dung will reach the biogas plant

The Union Home Minister has announced an important initiative to prevent effluent from Delhi’s dairies from flowing into Yamuna. He informed that soon a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed between MCD and National Dairy Development Board. Under this system, the dung coming from dairies and cow sheds will be directly transported to biogas and organic fertilizer plants. Amit Shah said that the implementation of this model will ensure scientific management of garbage and waste on the banks of Yamuna, which will help in reducing the pollution level in the river. Besides, the use of cow dung in the production of energy and organic fertilizer will also promote environmental protection and better utilization of resources.

128 STP installed

During the review meeting, officials told Amit Shah that so far 128 sewage treatment plants (STP) have been installed in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as part of efforts to make Yamuna river pollution-free. Apart from this, there are plans to build 99 new STPs by the end of 2027, which will significantly increase the sewage treatment capacity. In the meeting, Amit Shah instructed the officials that effective and regular monitoring of discharge from STP, industrial waste and various drains should be ensured. He clarified that in an important campaign like cleaning of Yamuna, mere satisfactory work is not enough, but there should be concrete and measurable results which can show real improvement in the quality of river water.

In the review meeting, officials informed that the work of de-silting (removing silt) of drains falling into Yamuna is going on at a fast pace. This year, a target was set to remove a total of 28.57 lakh metric tons of silt from the drains, out of which about 97% work has been completed so far. Officials said that a target has been set to remove the remaining silt by June 15. During the meeting, Amit Shah directed that scientific and sustainable arrangements should be ensured for the disposal of silt taken out from drains. He said that this silt should be used in various manufacturing and construction projects, so that it does not flow back into Yamuna during monsoon.

Amit Shah wrote on ‘X’

After the meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on Twitter that the Modi government is fully committed to making Yamuna clean and pollution-free. He said that many important decisions have been taken during the review of works related to cleaning and revitalization of Yamuna. Amit Shah wrote, “Modi government is committed to clean Yamuna. Had a review meeting regarding the cleanliness of Yamuna. There will be an MOU between MCD and NDDB to stop the waste of Delhi’s dairy sector from falling into Yamuna, which will make cow dung gas and fertilizer from dairy waste.”

He further said that under the cleaning of drains falling into Yamuna, a target was set to remove 28.57 lakh metric tons of silt this year, out of which 97% silt has already been removed. He said that this silt will be used in construction works, so that it does not reach the river again and cause pollution. The Home Minister also informed that so far 129 Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) have been started in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, 59 new STPs will be installed by the end of the year 2027, which will increase sewage treatment capacity and help in stopping the flow of untreated dirty water into Yamuna.
