Trump appeals to Israel and Iran to stop firing immediately
Amid rising tensions once again in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has appealed to Israel and Iran to immediately stop military action. “Israel and Iran must immediately cease ‘firing’,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday.
This statement of Trump has come at a time when for the first time after the ceasefire in April, a direct military confrontation has been seen between the two countries. Recent developments have once again placed the entire Middle East under threat of widespread regional conflict.
Iran fired ballistic missiles towards Israel on Sunday night, prompting airstrike sirens to sound in several areas of northern Israel. The Israeli military said its air defense system was activated as soon as the missiles were detected and civilians were instructed to evacuate.
In response, Israel targeted several targets inside Iran. According to reports, Israel attacked facilities located in the Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex. This is the first time since the ceasefire in April that an Iranian energy facility has been targeted. Iranian officials acknowledged that parts of the complex were damaged, although no casualties were reported.
The Israeli military later issued a statement saying it had launched a large-scale military operation aimed at weakening Iran’s air defense capabilities. According to the military, the systems targeted were being deployed by Iran.
Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, claimed on social media platform X that Iran fired 11 ballistic missiles at Israel. He said Israel was targeting Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launch sites and other strategic structures.
According to Iranian state media, employees at the Mahshahr complex were given immediate evacuation instructions. Officials said the damage was being assessed. State media also claimed that five production lines at the complex had been damaged since the fighting began on February 28.
Meanwhile, according to American and Israeli sources, an important phone conversation also took place recently between Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It was reported that this conversation was held on Sunday from Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
According to a US official quoted by US news website Axios, Trump had urged Netanyahu to stop additional attacks for now. According to the official, Trump had said that “we are very close to a good agreement.”
Although diplomatic efforts are ongoing, the situation on the ground still remains extremely sensitive. The US says efforts will continue to advance nuclear and security talks despite ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran.
Analysts believe the crisis could push the entire Middle East toward a major regional war if both sides fail to limit military action. At present, the eyes of the international community are focused on Washington, Tehran and Jerusalem, where the decisions taken in the next few days can decide the direction of the region.
