Philippines Earthquake Video: On Monday, a powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude occurred on Mindanao island in the southern Philippines. Five people died in the southern city of General Santos. Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for several coastal areas of the Philippines and Indonesia. People living near the seashore have been advised to evacuate immediately.

According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a depth of only 10 km. Earthquakes that occur at shallow depths cause more ground shaking, which increases the risk of tsunami. GFZ initially reported its intensity as 7.3, then changed it to 8.2 and later to 7.8. Many buildings were turned into debris due to the tremors. A school building was also seen collapsing.

Immediately after the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued an alert, warning that dangerous ocean waves could reach coastal areas in the area. After this, Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency also issued a tsunami warning for the north-eastern coastal areas of the country, and asked people to remain alert.

The Philippines’ government agency, PHIVOLCS, warned that tsunami waves up to one meter higher than normal tide could reach affected coastal areas. The agency advised people in several provinces in the southern Philippines to immediately move to higher ground or reach safe places away from the sea.

Aftershock warning

PHIVOLCS also said that this powerful earthquake could cause damage and strong aftershocks in the coming hours and days. Relief and disaster agencies are currently monitoring sea levels and monitoring the situation. Officials have asked people to remain alert, ignore rumors and follow government instructions.
