Ujjwala Yojana shock? Now only so many cylinders will be available in a year, know the new rule of refill immediately

A very important news is coming out regarding Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. If you or someone in your family is taking advantage of this scheme, then this information is very useful for you. The main objective of this scheme, launched in the year 2016, was to liberate women from rural and poor families from the deadly smoke of wood and coal. Initially, under this scheme, the government used to provide 12 subsidized cylinders to the beneficiaries in a year, but with time, major changes have been made in its rules.

Earlier this quota was reduced to 9 cylinders annually and now the government has reduced it further in view of the ever increasing fuel prices and budgetary burden. According to the new rules, now the annual quota has been fixed at only 4 cylinders. The government argues that this decision has been taken considering the average annual consumption of Ujjwala families, which is usually only 4 to 5 cylinders in a year. In such a situation, the big question arises that now after how many days can you refill the cylinder? Let us understand it in simple language.

The entire mathematics of subsidy changed

After the implementation of this new rule, the method of getting subsidy has also completely changed. At present, the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme are given a direct subsidy of Rs 300 on every 14.2 kg cylinder. This money reaches the beneficiary’s bank account directly through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Since now the annual quota has been limited to only 4 cylinders, you will get this subsidy of Rs 300 only on the first 4 refills in a year. This means that a family will be able to avail a total subsidy of only Rs 1,200 in a year. If you have a large family and you use more than 4 cylinders in a year, then from the fifth cylinder onwards you will have to pay the full normal price without subsidy.

After all, in how many days can the cylinder be refilled?

Now let us talk about the most important question that how much gap or time limit should there be between refilling the cylinder. According to the rules, since only 4 cylinders are to be available in a year, then for a medium or small family, one cylinder should last for an average of 3 months i.e. about 90 days. Accordingly, you can book your cylinder refill every three months.

Although there is no such strict restriction for booking in the rules of gas companies that you should book only after exactly 90 days, but there is a big catch here. If you take 4 consecutive cylinders in the first 4 months of the year, the subsidy you get for the remaining 8 months of the year will end. Therefore, taking care of your pocket, refilling once every 3 months is the most sensible and balanced way.

Why did the government have to take this step?

In fact, due to the ongoing tension in West Asia (Middle East) and disruptions in the global supply chain, the cost of importing LPG for India has increased significantly. The cost per cylinder for government oil companies has gone above Rs 1,600. If we talk about current prices, the price of LPG for general customers in Delhi is around Rs 942, while after the subsidy of Rs 300 for Ujjwala beneficiaries, it effectively comes to Rs 642. This is why the government has limited the number of cylinders to balance the budget.
