In the first qualifier match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023), the team of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) by 15 runs and made it to the final. This Chennai vs Gujarat match was played at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where the Gujarat team won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Gujarat Titans fell to 157 in 20 overs
Chasing the target in the match, the team of Gujarat Titans lost all their wickets and scored only 157 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Shubman Gill contributed the maximum 42 runs for the team. While Rashid Khan scored 30 runs off 16 balls with three fours and two sixes. Wriddhiman Saha walked to the pavilion after scoring 12 runs, while Darshan Advisor scored 17 runs in 16 balls and Vijay Shankar scored 14 runs in 10 balls.
All the bowlers of Chennai performed amazingly in the match. Deepak Chahar, Mahesh Tikshan, Ravindra Jadeja and Mathisha Pathirana got maximum two wickets each for the team. While one wicket went to Tushar Deshpande’s account.
A small mistake cost Hardik Pandya’s team
In the match, Hardik Pandya’s team Gujarat team’s new bowler Darshan Nalkande made such a mistake, the whole team had to bear the brunt of the defeat. Actually, fast bowler Darshan gave success in the form of Rituraj Gaikwad in the second over of the innings, but when the Gujarat team was celebrating, then the umpire shocked them by calling it a no-ball.
CSK had crossed 170 with the brilliant batting of Rituraj Gaikwad
Batting first after losing the toss, the team of Chennai Super Kings had put 172 on the scoreboard after losing 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Rituraj Gaikwad scored the most runs for the team. While his fellow opener Devon scored 40 runs off 34 balls with 4 fours.

Ravindra Jadeja became the victim of Mohammed Shami after scoring 22 runs off 16 balls. Captain Dhoni’s magic was not seen in this match and he returned to the pavilion after scoring only 1 run in 2 balls. Ajinkya Rahane contributed 17 runs for his team, while Rayudu also scored 17 runs in 9 balls with 1 four and a six.
Mohammed Shami took maximum 2 wickets for Gujarat Titans against Chennai in the match. Apart from him, Mohit Sharma took two wickets for 31 runs in 4 overs. On the other hand, Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed took one wicket each.
Mohammed Shami took 2 wickets for 28 runs in four overs. While Rashid Khan got one wicket for 37 runs in 4 overs.
Significantly, even though Gujarat Titans have lost in Qualifier 1, they will face the winner of Eliminator One in Qualifier 2. Still the team of Gujarat Titans can make it to the finals. However, in Qualifier One, they were beaten by 15 runs in the team of Chennai Super Kings.
This decision of Dhoni also brought Chennai to the final.
After the sixth over, Dhoni got 6 consecutive overs done by spinners Mahish Teekshana and Ravindra Jadeja. During this, the Gujarat team could score only 41 runs and lost 2 big wickets. Just during this, Dhoni tightened his grip on Gujarat through spinners. Due to this, the net runrate pressure on the Gujarat team and the entire middle order collapsed in the process of scoring runs.
