Air pollution is slowly taking away not only your lungs but also your brain and memory, a big claim in new research.
The bad effects of the air we breathe every day are not limited only to our lungs and heart. A new and shocking scientific research shows that air pollution is also causing serious damage to our brain and memory. Especially the micro pollutant particles (PM2.5) emitted from traffic, factories and forest fires are weakening the cognitive function of the human brain i.e. the ability to think and understand.
Brain is affected even in areas with less pollution, damage seen in MRI
This important study has been done by researchers from McMaster University of Canada, which has been published online in the famous ‘Journal Stroke’ on 13 May 2026. After analyzing data from nearly 7,000 middle-aged people and the effects of PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), scientists found that people living in areas where air pollution levels were higher performed worse on tests related to memory and mental speed. The surprising thing is that this negative effect was seen even in areas where the air is considered ‘clean’ according to international standards. According to research, MRI scans of the brains of people exposed to traffic pollution have shown signs of micro damage, and this effect is more pronounced in women than in men.
Risk of dementia starts decades earlier
According to Russell de Souza, associate professor at McMaster University, and Sandy Ajab, lead author of the study, serious mental conditions like dementia do not arise suddenly. It develops slowly in the body over several decades. Airborne toxins can begin to damage the brain years before any obvious symptoms occur. Although this study does not directly claim that pollution is the main cause of dementia, it strengthens the scientific evidence that shows how important clean air is to preserve memory as we age. Even after keeping aside risk factors like high BP and diabetes, a direct link has been found between air pollution and mental weakness.
