Are you a Mayonnaise lover? Expert says excess consumption may lead to heart diseases

New Delhi: If you are a Mayonnaise lover then you should be extra careful according to experts. Mayonnaise, a popular condiment made from a blend of eggs, vinegar, and oil, is enjoyed in various ways—whether as a sandwich spread, salad addition, or dip for fried and grilled foods. It is sweet and tangy in taste but it also has potential health threats such as heart disease and diabetes risk.

Dr Madan Mohan, Senior Consultant (Interventional Cardiologist) Cardiology, MGM Healthcare shared with News9“In modern society, there is growing awareness of the health implications associated with mayonnaise. Aside from its high-calorie content, which can contribute to elevated glucose and cholesterol levels, there are concerns about its heart health impact due to its omega-6 fatty acid content. If contaminated, mayonnaise can also foster the growth of harmful bacteria, leading to food poisoning. Moreover, excessive consumption may raise blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of diabetes.”

Health risks of mayonnaise consumption

According to Dr Mohan, “While mayonnaise contains unsaturated fats that benefit heart health when consumed in moderation, the type and amount of fat in mayo recipes are crucial. Excess saturated and trans fats can elevate LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, contributing to high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, weight gain from overconsumption can further increase LDL cholesterol, clogging blood vessels and heightening the risk of heart disease.”

Consuming it in limitation is better

Although awareness campaigns often focus on the connection between smoking, alcoholism, and cancer, it’s important to recognise that regular mayonnaise consumption can also affect heart health. “Its impact on cholesterol levels and potential to contribute to weight gain highlights the importance of moderation. Eating a reasonable amount of mayonnaise as part of a balanced diet is unlikely to harm heart health, but it’s essential to avoid pairing it with unhealthy foods,” said Dr Mohan.

How to be mindful before eating mayonnaise?

For those mindful of their heart health, alternatives like Greek yoghurt, avocado-based spreads, or olive oil mayonnaise offer healthier options. Low-fat or reduced-calorie mayonnaise is also a sensible choice, particularly for individuals on specific diets. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, which includes thoughtful food choices and regular exercise, helps mitigate the risks of heart disease.

In conclusion, rather than eliminating mayonnaise from the diet, an integrated approach to heart health is essential. A combination of smart eating habits, physical activity, and overall wellness will contribute to a heart-healthy lifestyle.
