Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary’ prequel shelved?
Ari Aster’s Hereditary was both a critical and commercial success breakthrough, but the horror filmmaker has no immediate plans for another movie in the universe.
At the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week event, which featured titles like Midsommar: Director’s Cut, Beau Is Afraid, and Eddington, the 39-year-old filmmaker said during a Q&A that he has a script that exists in that universe, but it is not being developed anytime soon.
“I wrote a prequel to this,” he admitted, as per Gold Derby. “It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don’t know where this goes.”
The 2018 occult film established Ari Aster as a major name in filmmaking, breaking records for A24 at the time and going on to gross over $90 million globally.

Aster’s supernatural psychological horror follows a family shaken by grief as they encounter increasingly strange and disturbing events they cannot explain.
It is packed with a star studded cast including Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne.
