Science-based AI governance not a brake on progress, but an accelerator of solutions: Guterres
New Delhi. On Friday, at the AI Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that science-based AI governance is not a brake on progress, but an accelerator of solutions. He warned that if there are no shared global standards for AI, there will be a ‘patchwork’ of rules around the world, which will increase costs, weaken security and deepen inequalities.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations said that clear and trust-building rules provide direction to businesses, allowing innovation to move faster on the right path. Science-based governance does not halt progress, but makes it more secure, fairer and more widely shared.
António Guterres stressed that timely assessment of the risks that AI may impact on child safety, labor market changes, and mass manipulation is essential so that countries can prepare, protect, and invest in their citizens. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that less propaganda, less fear and more facts and evidence. Guided by science, AI can be transformed from a source of uncertainty into a reliable engine for sustainable development goals. She called for creating policies that are as smart as the technology they seek to guide.
