ABGP will protest on May 25 demanding action on arbitrary MRP
Nagpur. All India Consumer Panchayat (ABGP) has demanded immediate strict action from the Central Government against arbitrary maximum retail price (MRP) on goods. The organization said that a demonstration will be held on May 25 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi regarding this demand.
Gajanan Pandey, member of the National Executive of All India Consumer Panchayat, said that ABGP has been continuously demanding printing of production price on every item for the last 40 years. Earlier, “retail price + local tax extra” was written on the items, due to which customers had to pay different prices for the same item due to different taxes in different states. To remove this discrepancy, the Central Government implemented the MRP system.
The organization alleges that the manufacturing companies are looting the customers by printing MRP many times higher than the actual price on the goods and misleading them by luring them with huge discounts. Especially on medicines, cosmetics, electronic goods, food items and daily use items, MRP is being printed much more than the production cost. Pandey said that despite raising voice on this issue several times, the administration did not take effective action.
All India Consumer Panchayat has demanded that it should be made mandatory to print the production price along with MRP on every item and printing of arbitrary MRP by the producing companies should be banned. An independent judicial authority should be created to decide fair and equitable MRP.
This authority should be given powers to investigate, review and take action on MRP. Apart from this, special control arrangements should be made for medicines, food items and essential commodities. Strict punitive action should be taken against producers and sellers who cheat customers.
Gajanan Pandey said that this nationwide movement is being organized under the leadership of the organization’s National President Narayanbhai and National Secretary Jayantbhai Katheria regarding these demands. Thousands of workers from across the country are expected to attend Jantar Mantar in New Delhi at 10 am on May 25.
