“Bangladesh Cricket Board is not a security agency..”, BCB gave a befitting reply to Shakib Al Hasan.

Dhaka: Bangladesh will soon play a Test against South Africa in October after the Test series with India. Bangladesh player Shakib Al Hasan wants to retire from home ground in this test against South Africa. For this he had sought security from Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Shakib: Bangladesh Cricket Board has given a befitting reply to this demand. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Farooq Ahmed has claimed that the board cannot provide “personal security” to Shakib Al Hasan. On Thursday, Shakib expressed his desire to retire from the Test format on his home ground when South Africa tours.

South Africa did not approve

For now, the series against South Africa in October remains uncertain as South Africa Cricket is yet to give security clearance for the Test following an inspection of the venue earlier this week.

There is uncertainty regarding this series because Bangladesh is not considered safe in terms of security due to the massive student protests that took place in July and August. Hundreds of people were killed in Bangladesh due to this demonstration. As a result, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on 5 August and fled the country.

Is related to murder case

Shakib was one of 147 people named in a murder case in Dhaka last month. He became a member of the Awami League-led government in January this year. Shakib, 38, sought security assurances and solutions from the BCB during the press conference ahead of the second Test against India in Kanpur. Farooq responded to Shakib's comment by saying that BCB is not a security agency and they cannot do much about it.

Security is not in the hands of BCB

“Shakib's security is not in the hands of the board,” Farooq said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. The Board cannot provide personal security to any individual. He will have to take a decision regarding this. “His protection must come from the highest levels of government.”

Farooq said, “BCB is not a security agency like police or RAB (Rapid Action Battalion). We have not talked to anyone (in the government) about that. “Since his case is sub judice, we can’t really do much about it.”

Didn't stop me from retiring

Farooq also said that he did not try to change Shakib's mind about retiring from Test cricket and said, “Of course nothing like that is going to happen, (if he) plays his last Test at home. Shakib is going through a difficult phase in his life. I did not try to stop him from retiring. He felt that it was the right time for him to retire. I respect his decision.”

Earlier this week, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in-charge of cricket operations Shahryar Nafees had said that Shakib would not be “unduly harassed” when he returns to Bangladesh for the first time since the fall of the Awami League government.
