It was earlier reported that BCCI is going to declare retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Edition on Saturday (September 28). This is as per a report published in Cricbuzz, it was noted that the IPL Governing Council is likely to convene on Saturday at Bengaluru and the same is expected within the next 24 hours.
From the available information, it is understood that the meeting of the governing council of IPL will be held on 3rd March, at the Four Season hotel in Bengaluru at 11.30 AM.
There is no official clarity over the number of retentions per team. It is speculated that the numbers could range between 2 and 8. The BCCI might settle at a number somewhere in the middle, 5-6, including the RTM option.
Besides resolving the issue of how many retentions each franchise will be allowed, the Governing Council is expected to make a call on the date and location of the IPL 2025 mega auction as well. If the reports are to be believed, then by the end of November, the IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to be conducted in a Gulf City.
Saudi Arabia is very much interested in hosting the auction and if the GC does not object, it might take place in Riyadh. Last year, the 2024 IPL auction was held on December 19, 2024 at Coca-Cola Arena, Dubai.
Apart from this,MS Dhoni, the former Indian cricket team captain, who made his last appearance on the field of international cricket on August 15, 2020, has in fact played in the 2024 edition of the lucrative tournament. He, however, did not lead the team instead handing over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad who as it turned out, couldn’t take the team to the playoffs in his first season.
Also, since IPL 2024 came to an end, there has been no confirmation of Dhoni’s return for the next season. It would be keenly followed if the cricketer who has won the IPL five times in the past decides to don the jersey and play again in some of the richest cricket leagues across the globe.
Also, not just Dhoni, even there are speculations about Rohit Sharma’s participation in the IPL. The captain of the Indian national team has been with the Mumbai Indians since IPL 2011 and it would be interesting to see if he is kept by the franchise in advance of the IPL 2025 big auctions.
