Big verdict in Hathras case after 900 days: 3 accused acquitted, one sentenced to life imprisonment

The SC-ST court on Thursday gave its verdict in the famous Hathras gangrape case of Uttar Pradesh. The court acquitted 3 of the 4 accused while convicted one accused. On 14 September 2020, some youths raped a Dalit girl in Hathras. After that he was admitted to Safdarganj Hospital in Delhi. The girl died during treatment on 29 September.

The SC-ST court has acquitted 3 accused Lavkush, Ramu and Ravi while the court has sentenced Sandeep to life imprisonment and 50 thousand fine.

Mahipal Singh Nimhotra, the lawyer for the aggrieved party, said that he would go to the High Court against this decision of the court. The CBI had filed a charge sheet in the gangrape and murder case.

On 14 September 2020, a Scheduled Caste girl was gang-raped in a village in Chandpa area of ​​Hathras. Four youths of the village raped her and tried to strangle her. The girl died on 29 September 2020 at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Based on the daughter’s statement, the police arrested the four accused Sandeep, Ravi, Ramu and Lavkush.

When did this matter happen?

On September 14, 2020, an incident of rape with a Scheduled Caste girl came to light in a village in Chandpa district. Referred to Aligarh JN Medical College from District Hospital. The police have registered a case of murderous attack and SC-ST harassment against one of the accused, Sandeep.

On September 22, on the basis of the daughter’s statement, section 376D of gangrape was extended and the names of three other accused were included.

The second accused Lavkush was arrested by the police on 23 September.

On September 25, the police arrested the third accused Ravi.

On September 26, the fourth accused Ramu was arrested by the police.

On September 28, the girl was referred to Delhi from Aligarh Medical College in a very critical condition.

The girl died on September 29 at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Against the wishes of the family, the administration cremated the dead body of the daughter at midnight.

On October 2, five policemen including the then SP, CO were suspended.

On October 4, the state government had recommended a CBI inquiry into the matter.

– On October 11, the CBI started the investigation of the case.

On November 21, the CBI took the four accused lodged in Aligarh Jail to Gujarat for polygraph and brain mapping tests.

On December 06, again under house arrest from Gujarat in Aligarh Jail.

– On 18 December 2020, the CBI filed a charge sheet against the four accused in the Hathras Special Court (SC-ST Act) after investigation.

– On 02 March 2023, the court found one accused guilty and acquitted three.
