IMD Alert : Cyclone ‘Mandus’ formed in the Bay of Bengal is now affecting ten states of the country. The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in ten states of the country due to Cyclone Mandus. At the same time, cold wave is also predicted in some states of the country.

We tell you that the Meteorological Department has also issued a red orange alert for heavy rains in some states of the country. Friday, December 9 i.e. midnight today, ‘Mandus’ will proceed from Sriharikota and Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh. In view of this threat, there is a possibility of heavy rain in many parts of Tamil Nadu.

Mandus is very likely to move west-northwestwards over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south coast of Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Sriharikota around midnight on December 9 with gustiness of 70 kmph. Puducherry is about 160 km from Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has taken all precautionary measures in view of the forecast of heavy rains.

Rain with scattered thundershowers is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Heavy rain is likely over North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh. Scattered thundershowers are likely over Northeast Tamil Nadu coast, Southeast Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Heavy rains are likely over Puducherry, Rayalaseema and Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, especially these coastal areas. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar is likely to witness fog in the morning.

Impact of Cyclone in South India

The IMD also said that rain will occur in Bagalkot, Kalburgi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir districts of North Karnataka. Southern districts of Karnataka will also receive rain.

Red alert in Tamil Nadu

The IMD today issued a red alert for 3 districts in Tamil Nadu – Cyclone Mendus has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm in Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Kanchipuram. IMD has warned of light to moderate rains at most places and heavy to heavy rains at some places due to Cyclone Mendus.

Heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places in Cuddalore districts. Heavy rain is expected in Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai districts and Karaikal.
