Cheating of ₹ 5.36 lakh on the pretext of marriage, case registered against the accused

A girl from Moradabad was duped of Rs 5.36 lakh on the pretext of marriage on a matrimonial site. The accused had described himself as a government employee and unmarried, but a picture found on Instagram revealed his reality.

Moradabad: Taking advantage of the trust built on a matrimonial website, a young man extorted lakhs of rupees from a girl and her family. The accused arranged the relationship by claiming himself to be working in a government department and unmarried, but a clue surfaced on social media exposed the entire matter. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case and started investigation.

Conversation started from matrimonial site

According to the victim, in March 2026, she met a young man named Karthik, resident of Haridwar, through Jeevansathi.com. During the conversation, the accused described himself as a clerk in a government department and unmarried. After continuous talks and contact with the family, both the parties agreed to the marriage.

It was told that in the first week of May, the accused reached the girl’s house with some people posing as his family members. After family talks, the relationship was finalized and the traditional Tika ceremony was also performed.

Additional amount demanded after Tika ceremony

The family, relying on the relationship, gave Rs 2.51 lakh in cash to the accused during the Tika ceremony. Even after this, the accused asked for money several times citing different needs and excuses. The victim’s family also gave additional amount out of trust.

According to the complaint, in total the accused took into his possession Rs 5.36 lakh. During this time, he kept talking about marriage preparations and future plans, which did not raise any suspicion.

Truth revealed from Instagram photo

The big turn in the case came when the girl saw a picture of the accused with a woman on his Instagram profile. When asked about this, the accused called the woman his wife. After this the girl and her family started gathering information independently.

Investigation revealed that the accused is already married and has children. The allegation is that he deliberately gave false information by hiding his marital status and gained financial gain.

Police registered the case

On the complaint of the victim, the police have registered a case against the accused Karthik, his alleged mother Sunita and other unknown people under sections of cheating, forgery and related offenses. The police are now also investigating whether the accused has targeted other girls in a similar manner.

Officials say that investigation into the case is ongoing and financial transactions are also being examined along with digital evidence. Further legal action will be taken based on the facts emerging in the investigation.
