Kathmandu, 16 March. China is trying to impose the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on Nepal. China has announced that the BRI project has started in Nepal but the Government of Nepal has not yet accepted it. On Thursday, China’s Ambassador to Nepal Chan Song claimed in an event organized in Kathmandu that the BRI is completely open, inclusive and transparent. He said that now we will take forward the high level cooperation in BRI. BRI is not a geopolitical tool.

Nepal had signed the BRI document in the year 2017 under the leadership of the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. However, the BRI project did not take off. Nepal has taken a stand that it can only take grants but not BRI loans. China claimed that the BRI project has progressed in Nepal. He has been saying that Pokhara International Airport is a project under BRI.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday raised the issue of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) while congratulating Nepal’s newly elected President Ramchandra Paudyal. The two sides are expected to move forward with the high-level construction of the Belt and Road, expanding the scope of people-to-people exchanges and cooperation. In such a situation, China is trying to impose BRI project on Nepal. However, Nepal is not in favor of taking loan under China’s BRI project.
