Eight years long war ended

This matter is of February 2017. A leading Malayalam actress was kidnapped from her car on the night of 17 February. She was sexually assaulted for two hours and then released. The victim showed courage and filed a case which attracted the attention of the entire country.

The prosecution claimed that this attack was part of a larger conspiracy and Dilip had done the entire planning. He was later also accused of destroying evidence. But Dilip reiterated his innocence from the beginning.

What happened in the court?

A total of 261 witnesses were examined in the trial. Many film personalities were also there among them. The surprising thing was that 28 witnesses retracted their earlier statements. The examination of the witnesses alone lasted for 438 days.

Who was punished, who was acquitted?

Apart from Dilip, three more people were acquitted. But six people, including the main accused in the case, Pulsar Suni (Sunil NS), Martin Antony, Manikandan, Vijesh, Salim and Pradeep, were convicted of rape and conspiracy.

Dilip, who was present in the court premises as soon as the verdict was announced, said, “This was a well-planned conspiracy against me. I wholeheartedly thank all my lawyers and everyone who supported me.” The victim was also present in the court at the time of the verdict. Dilip has got relief after an eight-year long legal battle, while the rest of the accused will now face punishment.
