Paving the way for CSK to retain 'uncapped' MS Dhoni

If five-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wants to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, then their path is absolutely clear.

This has been possible because the IPL has decided that it will bring back one of its 2008 rules. Under that rule, if an international player has retired five years ago, he will be considered an uncapped player. This rule was never used and was removed in 2021. However, during the extensive discussion on uncapped players, the IPL informed all the franchises that it is bringing back this rule.

The rules given by the IPL to the franchises for retaining players read, “If a capped Indian player has not participated in international cricket for five calendar years and is not included in the central contract of BCCI, he will be declared uncapped.” Will be placed in the player category. This will be applicable only for Indian players.”

Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, Dhoni was retained by CSK as the second player for Rs 12 crore. Dhoni turned 43 in July. He has only featured in the IPL since his retirement in 2020. If CSK now decides to retain him as an uncapped player, Dhoni will be paid Rs 4 crore.

For the last few seasons, there has been a constant discussion whether this is Dhoni's last IPL season? After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the captaincy of CSK to Ruturaj Gaikwad before IPL 2024. He used to face very few balls while batting. Recently in an event, Dhoni had said that he and CSK will take a decision about their future after the players' retention rules come into effect.
