No scientific connection
According to the Breast Cancer Organization, experts believe there is no scientific link between bras and cancer, which is why not much research has been done on the issue. Nevertheless, the available studies clearly show that wearing a bra, bra tightness, bra color, or underwire does not increase the risk of cancer. A large 2014 study examined the bra-wearing habits of 1,513 women ages 55 to 74. The research found that none of the factors, including cup size, number of hours worn, bra fit and bra age, were associated with breast cancer.
Weight is the main culprit
A 1991 study claimed that women who did not wear bras had a lower risk of breast cancer. However, the data were too weak to be reliable. This difference may not be due to the bra itself, but to breast size and weight. Being overweight itself is a significant risk factor for cancer, and women with large breasts often wear bras for support. This makes it seem like the bra is the culprit, when the real culprit is the weight.
So how did this myth spread?
The 1995 book “Dressed to Kill” popularized the claim that bra pressure clogs the lymphatic system and prevents the body from flushing out cancer-causing toxins. But this claim has no scientific basis. Clothing items such as bras cannot block the lymphatic system.
Does bra tightness restrict lymph flow?
The answer is no. The lymphatic system is located deep within the body. A bra sits on the skin, and its pressure cannot reach a level that restricts lymph flow. A tight bra can only cause discomfort or pain, not cancer.
Can bra color cause cancer?
