What happens if you think too much?

According to the thoughts of Gautam Buddha, when a person experiences anything, many thoughts arise in his mind. At the same time, thoughts gradually start increasing, due to which feelings like comparison, fear, regret and apprehension arise in the mind of the person. These emotions cover up happiness just as clouds cover up the sun. Gautam Buddha has called this situation of overthinking as ‘Prapancha’.

In the first verse of the Dhammapada text, Gautam Buddha said, ‘Mind is everything, what a person thinks, that is what he becomes.’ The meaning of this verse is that thinking is not wrong, but it is necessary to think about good things, because a person becomes what he thinks. If a person keeps thinking about the past, he will remain immersed in the past instead of the present.

Gautam Buddha’s sermon on thinking too much

According to the Kalam Sutta, once the Buddha was preaching in the village of Kesaputta. Then he said about thinking more, merely following traditions does not free a person from thinking. For this reason, a person should experience it himself, so that he can get freedom from thinking about any topic again and again.

In Sutta Nipat, Buddha has clearly said that thinking too much leads to mental confusion and this confusion causes suffering. The solution to avoid this dilemma is not to stop thinking. Instead one should observe one’s thoughts, not drown in them.

How to get rid of overthinking?

To avoid overthinking, Buddha has told that whenever a thought comes to mind, identify it and give it a name. Like- is it fear, is it anger or is it anxiety. Now give direction to these thoughts and ask yourself what will happen by thinking about this topic. If nothing changes by thinking about that topic again and again, let that thought go.
