Government’s strong step: Grievance appeal committees will be functioning from March for safe use of social media
Running social media apps will now be safer. The government has informed that the grievance appeal committees formed to look into the complaints of the users will start functioning from March 1. If you have any complaint against the social media company, now you can do it easily.
Grievance Appeal Committees (GACs) formed to look into user complaints against major social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will start functioning, the Ministry of Electronics and IT said on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by the government, each of the three GACs will have a chairman, two full-time members from government departments and institutions, retired senior officials from industry, with a tenure of three years. The GAC is an important part of the overall policy and legislative framework to ensure that.
A large number of complaints by Internet intermediaries go unheard and receive unsatisfactory responses, leading to the need for a GAC. The GAC is expected to create accountability among all Internet platforms and intermediaries towards their users.
On behalf of the government, it was said that users will have the option to appeal against the decision of the Grievance Authority of Social Media Moderators and other Online Moderators before the GAC. The committee will try to hear the appeals of the users within a period of 30 days.
