NIPL is the international arm of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). With this integration, users in India and Nepal will be able to conduct seamless peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions using their mobile number, Virtual Payment Address (VPA) or UPI ID, without providing the required bank account details. This feature is currently available in select banks and is expected to expand to a larger network of financial institutions in the future.
According to NPCI, this is a major step towards strengthening cross-border digital payments and increasing financial inclusion. It will also strengthen economic and digital connectivity between India and Nepal. Moreover, the project is in line with major global efforts including the G20 agenda to make cross-border payments easier, better and cheaper.
Ritesh Shukla, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, NPCI International, said the launch of the cross-border remittance linkage between India and Nepal in partnership with NCHL reflects the organization’s commitment to innovation that meets the changing needs of communities around the world. He added that the initiative creates a real-time, affordable and secure channel for cross-border remittances, which eases the process for households in both countries and promotes financial inclusion.
By enabling real-time settlement, the system is expected to significantly reduce transaction costs compared to traditional remittance channels and provide faster access to funds to users on both sides of the border, particularly households dependent on timely remittances.
Nilesh Mansingh Pradhan, Chief Executive Officer, NCHL, said that the successful launch of this connection between Nepal and India is a testament to the close cooperation and shared commitment to make cross-border fund transfers easy, real-time and convenient.
