Commonwealth Games 2022India’s Sudhir scripted history by winning a gold medal in the men’s heavyweight final of the Para Powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games with a new record. Sudhir is the first Indian to win a gold medal in the Para Powerlifting event of the Commonwealth Games. He lifted 212 kg in his second attempt and won the gold medal with a record 134.5 points. However, Sudhir failed to lift 217 kg in his last attempt. Nigeria’s Ikechuku Christian Ubichuku won the silver with 133.6 points while Scotland’s Milli Uli won the bronze with 130.9 points.

In powerlifting, lifting weights are built according to body weight and technique. For the same weighting, the player with less weight will get more points than the other. Earlier, Manpreet Kaur and Sakina Khatoon missed out on a medal in the women’s lightweight final, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, while in the men’s lightweight final, Paramjit Kumar finished last after failing in all three attempts. Manpreet lifted 87 kg in her first attempt and 88 kg in her second attempt, but failed to lift 90 kg in her third attempt. Manpreet got 89.6 marks.

At the same time, Sakina failed to lift 90 kg in the first attempt but in the second attempt she lifted this weight. His third attempt in 93kg failed. He has got 87.5 marks. Joe Newson of England won the gold medal with a best effort of 101kg with a score of 102.2. Her compatriot Olivia Broome won the silver medal with a best effort of 111kg scoring 100 points. Kenya’s Helen Wavira Kariyuki won the bronze medal with a best effort of 97kg with a score of 98.5.

In the men’s lightweight final, Paramjeet failed to lift 165kg in any of his three attempts and was eliminated from the competition. Malaysia’s Boni Buniyau Gustin lifted 220kg in her third attempt to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games with a record score of 154.6. Mark Swann of England took silver with a score of 145.5 while Innocent Nnamdi of Nigeria won the bronze with a score of 132.5. Swan and Nnamdi put in a good effort lifting 202 kg and 190 kg respectively.
