Colombo : Several anti-government protesters in Sri Lanka, who had been stuck in Colombo resort for months, have filed a petition in the court against the police to remove them from the protest site. The Island newspaper reported on Friday that four petitions have been filed in the Court of Appeal. Earlier, the police had issued written and verbal orders to these groups to vacate the Galle Face Green complex by the sea.

The petitioners said that the police’s directions violated their constitutional rights and asked the court to stay the same till the hearing of their petitions. Sri Lanka is currently facing an economic crisis and is being opposed and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to flee the country on 9 July and Rashtrapati Bhavan and many other important institutions were occupied by protesters.
