Marcos meets Blinken in Philippine amid US-China crisis

Manila : Philippine President Ferdinance Marcos Jr. welcomed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken here on Saturday, amid strains in relations between the US and China. Blinken is the first highest-ranking US officer to visit the Philippines after taking office.
However, there was no live telecast of Blinken’s visit to Manila’s Rashtrapati Bhavan on the official channel. However, a brief newscast later reported the visit of the top US diplomat. Only a few journalists from Manila were allowed in full coverage of the incident.

The President’s Office later released photos of Marcos Jr. and Blinken greeting each other. Both the leaders attended the meeting with their officers. Marcos Jr. mentioned at the meeting that he was surprised at the changing moment of developments related to the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan this week. “I don’t think the visit added any intensity,” Marcos Jr. said based on a transcript released by Rashtrapati Bhavan. “It shows how unstable not only this region, but the international diplomatic landscape is,” he said. Blinken reiterated the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines and Washington’s commitment to “working together on shared challenges.”
