IPL 2025: Punjab Kings sacked the World Cup-winning coach, will the team's fortunes change?

Indian Premier League 2025: For IPL 2025, Punjab Kings have taken a big decision and decided to part ways with head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar. Bayliss was made the head coach of the team last year, where he replaced former Indian legendary spinner Anil Kumble. The performance of the Punjab team has not been good in the IPL for some years, where the team could not make it to the playoffs even once in the last ten years. Also, the team has not been able to win the trophy even once so far. The team finished eighth last year and ninth this year.

Bellis has won titles for many teams

Australia's Bayliss has won titles around the world as a coach of several teams, including the 2019 World Cup with England, two IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders, Big Bash League with Sydney Sixers. Punjab is keen to enter the new season with a new staff ahead of the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. Removing Bangar and Bayliss is part of this strategy, as the franchise now looks to rebuild itself both on and off the field.

Punjab has changed coaches regularly

Kumble was the head coach of the team from 2020 to 2022 and during this time the team could not make it to the playoffs even once. Let us tell you that Punjab changes coaches regularly. The team appointed Kumble as the coach in 2016 after sacking Sanjay Bangar from the post of head coach. The franchise will now also be looking for a new captain, as Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from all formats of cricket earlier this year citing 'lack of motivation'.

Ponting has become the head coach of the team

Punjab recently roped in Ponting, who parted ways with Delhi Capitals after spending seven years with the team. On this, Ponting said, 'I am very happy to be back in IPL. It has been a big part of my life. I have been in IPL for ten or 11 years. What pulls me back to IPL is the level of cricket and the quality of players you get a chance to work with.'
