Retention slabs, new RTM policy, strict rule for foreign players – EXPLAINED

5 PM IST on October 31, 2024 is the deadline for all franchises to submit their list of retained players.

Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions of IPL.

Bengaluru: All the 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises will be able to retain six players each from their previous squads including usage Right To Match (RTM) card, the IPL governing council decided on Saturday. A team was allowed up to four retentions in the last mega auction held in 2022. It is the discretion of the franchise to choose its combination for Retentions and RTMs. The 6 retention/RTMs can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.

Let’s take a look at the new rules for the IPL 2025 mega-auction

Retention slabs and how do they work?

The first retention will cost Rs 18 crore followed by the second retention of Rs 14 crore and the third retention of Rs 11 crore. In case the franchise opts for fourth and fifth retention, they will again have to pay Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore respectively. For an uncapped player, he will be valued at Rs 4 crore if retained.

That means if a franchise opts for all six retentions, a total of Rs 79 crore will be deducted from their total purse of Rs 120 crore. That particular team will be left with Rs 41 crore at the auction to make the full squad. It is also to be noted that if any franchise wish to retain any of their players above the retention slab, that extra money will be deducted from the purse.

Revamped RTM rule and how it is different from previous editions

RTM stands for Right To Match and is being used by the franchises to buy back their existing player in the auction. While there are six retentions, a franchise can retain six players directly or go with five retentions and one RTM or four retentions ad twp RTM and so on.

But there is a change in RTM policy this time unlike the previous years. Before a team could directly match the direct bid to claim their existing player in the auction. This time, the team with highest bid will get one final opportunity to further increase the price of the player before the team holding the RTM re-signs the player.

Example: Suppose KKR’s Andre Russel is in the auction and RCB have the highest bid of Rs 10 crores for the West Indian. KKR will be asked if they wish to exercise the RTM. If they agree, then RCB will get another chance to raise Russell’s price. If RCB now raise it to Rs 15 crores, then KKR will have to buy Russell at Rs 15 crores.

Rules specifically for overseas players

Select English and Australian players have time and again ditched their franchises after getting picked at the auction, often citing fatigue and other priorities. The BCCI is now planning to impose a two-year ban on any player who withdraws after being picked at the auction. Specifically for overseas stars, if they don’t register for an auction during a year, they can’t participate for another two years.
