IPL 2026 Auction: From Ashwin to Maxwell — Big Stars Who Will Miss the Season

The Indian Premier League will hold its auction for the 2026 season in Abu Dhabi on December 16, but this edition will unfold without several marquee names who have defined the league for more than a decade. From world-class all-rounders to iconic match-winners, a handful of giants have stepped away from the tournament, marking the end of an era.

Glenn Maxwell
Australia’s explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has opted out of the IPL 2026 auction, effectively pausing his association with the league. “After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name in the auction this year. It’s a big call, and one made with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” Maxwell shared on Instagram.

Moeen Ali
England all-rounder Moeen Ali will feature in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), automatically ruling him out of IPL 2026. A consistent presence since 2018, Moeen has represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, scoring 1,167 runs and taking 41 wickets in 73 matches.

Faf du Plessis
Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has also decided not to participate in the 2026 auction, choosing to play in the PSL instead. In an Instagram post, the 41-year-old reflected on his journey: “This league has been a massive part of my journey… India has given me friendships, lessons and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person.”

Andre Russell
One of the most destructive T20 players ever, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has retired from the IPL ahead of the December 16 mini auction. His 12-season stint — filled with unforgettable knocks, match-winning spells and the trademark swagger — now comes to an emotional close. “Hanging up my IPL boots… but not the swagger,” Russell wrote while bidding goodbye to the KKR family.

Ravichandran Ashwin
Indian off-spinner R Ashwin had already announced his IPL retirement in August, shortly after stepping away from international cricket. A two-time IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings, Ashwin has been central to the league’s tactical evolution with his control, variations and cricketing intelligence.
