Is IPL 2026 Postponed? LPG Shortage Sparks Schedule Concerns

With the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule unveiled and set to begin on March 28, several reports have emerged that the tournament may be postponed due to the ongoing LPG crisis in India.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated on Monday saying that domestic and essential non-domestic sectors are being prioritised for LPG supply, as fuel availability is tight.

The LPG crisis in India stems from the ongoing conflict in West Asia, where tensions between Israel and Iran have disrupted energy supplies and maritime routes.

The war has also impacted global travel routes, especially those via Dubai, Qatar and other Middle Eastern countries.

The IPL governing Council Chairperson, Arun Dhumal, has said that the BCCI is closely monitoring the LPG crisis, and if the situation demands any new decision, it could be taken according to the situation.

“We are reviewing the development. Since this is an evolving situation, nothing can be said as of now. But given the requirement of the situation, we will take a call accordingly,” said Arun Dhumal.

According to reports, hotel owners’ associations in Chennai and Bengaluru have reported that they have LPG for only a day or two, forcing some hotels to even limit their menus to save fuel. If the situation persists, it could affect not just the IPL but may affect sectors including hospitals, schools, industries and restaurants.

Meanwhile, there are also logistical concerns due to travel disruptions. Several teams during the T20 World Cup 2026 were stuck in India even after their tournament ended.

The stranded West Indies and South Africa cricket teams started their departure on March 11 after being stuck in India after getting knocked out in the Super 8s  semifinals, respectively.

On the other hand, the BCCI has confirmed the start date of IPL 2026 and announced that the full schedule will be revealed in staggered phases, considering the elections in multiple states.

Five states in India will go to the polls in April-May, and due to security concerns, the BCCI will announce only the schedule for the first 20 days, confirmed Devajit Saikia, the board’s secretary.
