Big improvement in the health of newborns in Jharkhand, death rate reduced from 29 to 27; the report has arrived

Jharkhand News: A very relieving news has come out from Jharkhand regarding child health and nutrition. The latest report of the Sample Registration System (SRS) released by the Registrar General of India has shown positive results for the state. According to the report, this time the infant mortality rate in the state has decreased significantly as compared to previous years. This decline clearly shows that better work has been done on the ground regarding nutrition and medical care of infants. The effect of health schemes being run at the government level is now visible, which has helped in securing the lives of newborns. However, amidst this pleasant change, there is also a worrying aspect that there is still a huge gap in the health level of rural and urban areas, which is very important to bridge.

What does the latest report say?

If the data of this report is understood in depth, then infant mortality rate means the death of children within one year per thousand live births. The results of the latest survey show that Jharkhand has improved its performance by two places as compared to the previous figures. Now the infant mortality rate in the state has come down from 29 to 27. Health experts believe that this improvement may seem small, but it is a direct evidence of thousands of innocent lives being saved and health services being strengthened. Facilities provided at the time of delivery and vaccination campaigns have played a big role in improving this figure.

difference between village and city

Despite this success on the health front, the huge gap between rural and urban areas remains a big challenge for policy makers. According to statistics, the infant mortality rate in rural areas has reduced from 31 to only 29. On the contrary, if we talk about urban areas, this rate has fallen directly from 21 to 18. It is clear from these figures that the pace of improvement in cities has been much faster than in rural areas. Children are benefiting from better access and awareness of hospitals in cities. This situation shows that more efforts and resources are required to reach the child welfare schemes run by the Central and State Governments to the last reaches of the villages.

Inequality in health of sons and daughters

Another aspect of this report raises questions about the social thinking and awareness of the medical system. Gender inequality i.e. the difference between boys and girls in terms of child health still persists in the state. According to statistics, while the infant mortality rate among boys is 26, in case of girls this figure remains at 27. Even in rural areas, the mortality rate of girls has been seen to be higher than that of boys. The only matter of relief is that the condition of girls in urban areas has been recorded as much better. This disparity shows that there is a need to spread more awareness in the society regarding the health and care of daughters.

A decade’s journey and challenges

If we look at the long-term data, Jharkhand has registered a remarkable improvement of about 27.8 percent in the field of child health in the last decade. At one time the infant mortality rate in the state was estimated at around 37.4 percent, which has now come down to 27. However, when we compare it with the national average, we find that the pace of improvement has been faster in the entire country during this period. At the country level, the infant mortality rate has declined by 37.4 percent in a decade and the national figure has come down from 40.6 to 25.4. Jharkhand will have to further strengthen its rural health infrastructure to be at par with the national average.
