Lekha Washington Imran Khan loves Jihad: Actor Imran Khan’s partner, Lekha Washington, has responded to claims that she is facing ‘love jihad’ – a term used for romantic relationships where the man follows Islam and the woman belongs to another religion. Online trolling and reactions came to the fore when she appeared in the premiere of ‘Happy Patel: Dangerous Spy’.
41-year-old Lekha, who is an actor herself, recently shared a video on social media in which she and Imran’s multi-cultural background was highlighted. He took on online trolls, but with a little humor.
Lekha later explained in more depth about the reaction and the nature of their relationship in an interview. Refuting the allegations, the actor told how she is Burmese, Italian and Punjabi, grew up in South India and moved to North India.
Funny answer to the claims of ‘Love Jihad’
In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, she said, “Love Jihad – obviously this is what is being done to me,” and added that her father is a “Roman Catholic but agnostic personality.” She further told that “her love-jihad is being carried out by a man whose father is part Hindu, part Scottish and mother Muslim.”
“So I say, ‘Don’t do love jihad,’ and I say, ‘No, no. Instead, I spread light’ (sic),” she continued, emphasizing that she chooses to look beyond the hatred against her interfaith relationship.

‘Make the joke light’
Speaking to Money Control, Lekha said that her videos are being used to promote hatred and division. He claimed that these were completely contrary to his views. According to him, it is important to deal with it with humor. “In my opinion, really, keep this joke light,” he said.
She then addressed the scrutiny of her interfaith relationship, claiming that her family is “open, diverse and respectful”, and so is her partner’s family.
Lekha said, “I get to see how multicultural, big, kind, creative and inclusive people support each other beautifully. How lucky am I? I am so happy to see the goodness of the people around me.” He also said that he is very happy to see the goodness of the people around him.

Lekha also expressed disappointment over the habit of some social media users that they limit any woman to the closest man and called it a limited part of the society in which we work.
Lekha, 41, stressed that she had ten years of experience as a lead actor, but quit when she felt the hatred towards women was too much. He spent another decade starting and running a successful art practice so he could find money and mental freedom.
Reply to negative comments
When asked if negative comments affect him, the actor said that it says more about him than them. She said that we live in a world where women are judged first by their looks and much later by their personality. She said, “I will continue to be the best that I can be, and do the best that I can. Haters will hate, lovers will love.”
Lekha has worked mostly in Tamil and Telugu language films as well as some Hindi productions. She is best known for her roles in Jayamkondan (2008), Vedam and Va, both of which were released in 2010. Imran Khan became famous with his acting in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na in 2008. He was recently seen in the film Happy Patel: Dangerous Detective (2026).
